On its Twitter account, Scholars At Risk (SAR) – the organization that protects ‘scholars and the freedom to think, question and share ideas’ – has reiterated its call for releasing and dropping the ‘retaliatory’ charges against Dr. Merera Gudina, the leader of the Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC) – as Gudina’s next court hearing of June 2 approaches. It’s to be remembered that Scholars At Risk issued a statement on May 5, 2017; in the statement, SAR condemned the charges against Dr. Merera Gudina as retaliatory. Dr. Gudina was put in prison by the TPLF-led Ethiopian government on November 30, 2016 in connection with the two-year nonviolent movement of #OromoProtests.
A university professor, Dr. Gudina was forced out of his job several months before his arrest as part of the government’s campaign against the leader of the only independent Oromo organization in Ethiopia.
